A “Family Law Attorney” is also sometimes called a “Divorce Lawyer” or a “Matrimonial or Domestic Relations Lawyer.”
We help to create relationships or family units through the preparation of Pre-Marital Agreements and Cohabitation Agreements for unmarried folks.
If things do not work out as had been hoped, then we help dissolve the family unit through the divorce process which includes custody, child and spousal support, alimony, valuation of assets including businesses, real estate and retirement plans, distribution of the assets and the preparation of a final Property Settlement Agreement. We often also handle name change matters, grandparent and third-party custody, abuse matters, and special relief matters such as ordering a spouse to stop dissipating an asset, forcing the sale of a home, freezing assets and a host of other issues.
Many of us also then work with our clients upon the divorce to change their estate plans. A new Will, Living Will and Power of Attorney removing the former spouse are prepared.
